Today we've got an review of For The Year's debut EP, Last Night. To be released on June 21, this is one EP everyone should have the day it comes out. Read our full review below!
Last Night is the debut EP from the Massachusetts band, For The Year. Recording with Paul Leavitt (All Time Low, The Dangerous Summer, Circa Survive), it added an extra bit of pressure to the debut being held up to the standards set by prior band's debuts. Luckily, Last Night delivers. The 5 song long EP brings a punch of upbeat energy and that classic pop-punk sound that's here just in time for the summer.
For The Year kicks it off strongly with "Lost Hearts & White Lies", setting the standard for the entire EP and gives listeners a taste of what to expect through the next 20 minutes. "Here's To You" is a toe-tapper that will be a fan favourite instantly with the crowd participation-sing along feel. "Distance" pulls most from the band's influences such as Mayday Parade and Man Overboard. The title track, "Last Night" adds an branched off smooth alternative sound into the mix, showing the different sides of the band's talents. Ending with a slower acoustic jam, "Somewhere In Between", it's a nice change from what you would normally expect- the highest impact song. It's refreshing, memorable and the best way to end the experience.
When the band said this was a "high energy record with something for everyone", they weren't kidding. It fits into the same shelf as bands like Yellowcard and Man Overboard. Being the first debut, For The Year is already musically and especially vocally, well ahead of their band's years. Debut albums are just that, the first taste of what the band is capable of. But, they can only go up and if For The Year follows "Last Night" by delivering songs as catchy and impressive as this, we may have found our next band to break into the pop-punk elite.
Plus, I dare you to drive around listening to this on a summer night with the windows down and not sing along to every word.
